The Kopuawhara Story


The Kopuawhara Valley was owned and farmed by Ray's maternal grandparents and is now part of Tunanui Station. This idyllic peaceful valley with a small river flowing thought it, Was once the location of railway construction community in the 1930's.

A railway line was built to Gisborne which involved the construction of 11 tunnels and a viaduct.
Built in 1938 the Kopuawhara Railway Viaduct was the largest concrete railway construction of its kind in the southern hemisphere, today it holds an Historic Places Trust classification "B"

Guest staying at Tunanui can view this magnificent structure as it boarders Tunanui's property. Well researched folders about the history along with photos are available for guest to read at their leisure. Guests enjoy this part of the property, and it holds great walks, trout fishing and numerous swimming holes.
